A company in Israel has developed the world’s first saliva-based pregnancy test, available soon in pharmacies and other retail stores across Europe and the UK.
The newly developed test is produced by a company called Salignostics. SaliStick pregnancy test kits will be available early next year based on the technology used in COVID-19 kits. Kits will be available in the first quarter of 2023, according to the company.
Salignostics already has European CE certification for the marketing of SaliStick in the European Union. A US FDA approval application is currently being processed by Salignostics.
More than 300 women, both pregnant and non-pregnant, completed clinical trials of the tests last year.
Compared to traditional pregnancy tests, the saliva test is perhaps simpler (and less messy).
In order to test, participants place one part of the test kit into their mouths for several seconds so that saliva can be collected and analyzed.
The tests will produce reliable results in under 10 minutes.
In the same way as urine-based tests, this saliva test can detect the pregnancy hormone hCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) on the first day of a missed period.
