When trying for a baby, ovulation test strips are the most useful item you’ll have to help predict your most fertile time. These Extra Sensitive Ovulation Tests have been shown to be up to 99% accurate in both user and clinical trials. They’re the very same ones used by NHS hospitals in the UK and are manufactured to meet the most stringent European (CE) and American (FDA) standards.
Just before ovulation takes place, a hormone surge occurs in the female body. Luteinising Hormone (LH) is always present in the body, but its production increases dramatically in the middle of a woman’s cycle. When this happens, we know that ovulation will take place in the following 24-36 hours, resulting in the release of an egg from the ovary. This is a woman’s most fertile time, and intercourse should be planned, as this is the best time to try and make a baby.
Ovulation Test Strips work by detecting LH in urine, and a positive test will indicate that the surge of the hormone has taken place. These particular tests have a cut-off of 20mIU/ml, which means they’re particularly sensitive to changes in LH levels. (A standard test normally detects the hormone at 30mIU/ml. Note: the lower the number, the more sensitive the test!)
Because these Zoom Baby tests are extra-sensitive, you’ll be able to detect the LH surge earlier than when using regular ovulation tests.
Tracking your fertility isn’t just about science – it’s an intimate journey of discovery. As you become attuned to your body’s rhythms, you’ll likely notice subtle changes throughout your cycle. Some women report feeling more energetic or confident around ovulation. Others might experience changes in cervical mucus or a slight twinge in their lower abdomen. While these signs aren’t foolproof, they can complement your test results and temperature tracking. By tuning into these cues, you’re not just maximising your chances of conception – you’re gaining a deeper understanding of your own unique biology.
Basal Ovulation Thermometer
When using ovulation tests, it’s also worth tracking your basal body temperature at the same time. This is because your body temperature drops just before ovulation occurs and then rises by approx. 0.2 to 0.5 degrees Celsius after ovulation takes place. Regular tracking of your temperature will give you a greater idea of your cycle, and by regularly recording the results, you’ll be able to predict when you’re going to ovulate and get a firm indication of when you have.
This may sound complicated, but it really isn’t. The thermometer itself is simple to use. You can use it orally, rectally, or under the armpit, whichever way you prefer. It only takes two minutes to get your temperature, and the thermometer will beep when the result is ready to be read.
The thermometer should be turned off after use to prolong battery life. If you forget to do this, it’ll turn itself off after ten minutes of inactivity. The unit can be used for about two years before a new battery is required. The thermometer is CE approved.
Fertility Planning Charts
This sample bag comes complete with 12 fertility planning charts, allowing you to record your body temperature and other body changes for up to a year. By carefully recording results every day, you’ll soon have an intimate knowledge of how your cycle works and when you’re going to ovulate.
